Title: Letter from Robert Crawford, Turning Down a Post as a Clerk

Author(s): Crawford, Robert James

Petersham
[¿]6 Dec. 1821[¿]

Dear Sir

It was only yesterday afternoon
that I could obtain a conference with His
Excellency Sir Thos. Brisbane, on the subject
of the situation you have so
handsomely put into my power to accept.
He completely acquiesces with me in
opinion, that it was a very great compliment
confered on me a Stranger in
the Country, when you offered me
the appointment. _ A Clerkship in
Major Gentlemen's Office has been tendered
to me, and you must excuse

me when I accept it: not that
it is more respectable than the
one in your own Office, but
it is a more lucrative one.
The general and I may say the
principal object that young men
have in view, when they quit
their native home, and go to a
distant Country, is, to make (if
possible) a little money. This is
likewise my aim, and the only
reason I have in declining to
accept the situation in your office.
Before concluding, I beg leave

to express how gratified I felt
when Major [Gent] spoke to
me on the subject; and I
assure you that I will always
and with feelings of gratitude bear
in mind the very handsome
offer you have made me. -

I am respectfully
Dear Sir
Your Mo. Ob. Servt.
Rob. Crawford
